Cataclysm Design Blog

Welcome to the designer blog for Cataclysm! Be warned that this article has spoilers for the Rogue Sun comics, which I highly recommend you read, if you haven’t already! Cataclysm is a Rogue Sun villain who struck a dark bargain with powerful malevolent forces to be able to kill the previous Rogue Sun, Dylan’s father. She is able to drain those around her, and that power manifests in different ways in her kit.

Each one of Cataclysm’s abilities drains the enemy in different ways. Vitality Drain is a very straightforward example, taking your enemy’s HP and giving it to you, but Tendrils of Agony saps them of their available abilities. Her Defend can permanently take away one of your opponent’s abilities to leave them feeling even more helpless.

Cataclysm’s passive strips away a portion of your enemy’s health every time they gain a little energy, which wouldn’t be so bad if not for her scariest drain ability, her Ultimate ability. She is the only character in the game capable of removing your enemy’s energy, making them start all over again, taking more and more damage every time they try to save up enough to play their own ultimate. — Brian McKay

UPDATE! All-In can be shipped in two waves! Stretch Goal Character revealed!
7 months ago – Tue, Mar 12, 2024 at 03:31:31 PM

All-In Pledge Update
We've received a lot of requests if the All-In Pledge can be shipped in two separate waves, and we're happy to accommodate! If you'd like to do this, you will need to opt in to this in a post-campaign survey and you will need to pay shipping for both instances.

The first wave will ship all existing Pocket Paragons content a few weeks after the campaign ends. Once the Massive-Verse content is complete, you will receive that portion of your pledge with the rest of the Kickstarter backers.

Please note this is optional, you may still choose to receive your All-In Pledge all at once (when everything is ready) with only one shipping charge.

Stretch Goal Character Reveal
Our first stretch goal character is Radiant Yellow! Wendell, who holds the power of Radiant Yellow, can see into the future. His kit is all about controlling the timing of battle and reacting off of it. Power him up to see all potential possibilities!

Radiant Yellow will be added to the Team-Up expansion if our campaign reaches $38,000. We've got one week left to go!

<001> Design Blog

Welcome to the designer blog for <001>! Be warned that this article has spoilers for the Radiant Black comics, which I highly recommend you read, if you haven’t already! <001> is trying to hunt down the Radiants and take their power away from them. He is an expert at learning his opponent’s attacks and adapting his strategy to defeat them. In Pocket Paragons, <001>’s attacks change based on his opponent’s strengths– their Affinities.

Focus Blast is a 3 damage attack that become unblockable if your enemy has an Agility affinity. All three of his Strength, Agility, and Intelligence abilities get stronger against the ability they counter, if that is your enemy’s best attack. His Weapon becomes stronger if the enemy Affinity ability is exhausted, and his Defend readies if your enemy played their Affinity ability, both of which discourage your opponent from wanting to play their best card!

<001>’s tech is powered by being in proximity to the Radiants, draining their power to increase his own. His Power Siphon passive mirrors this, letting you increase your energy when your opponent does! Opponents that try to play Rest early and often to build up energy are just handing you extra uses of your Ultimate ability, while you get to continue the pressure with your regular attacks.  Shutting down your opponent’s best ability with most of your kit, while also pressuring their ability to generate energy, you can lead your enemies into making mistakes and capitalize on them! — Brian McKay

Pyre Design Blog

Welcome to the designer blog for Pyre! Be warned that this article has spoilers for the Dead Lucky comics, which I highly recommend you read, if you haven’t already!

Pyre can control the flames around him, and he can burn through his cards to turn the heat up on his enemies! By exhausting an extra card, you can activate the Boost effects on your cards. Many of his effects let you ready an ability, allowing you to keep the flames going. While exhausting a card to ready a card doesn’t seem like it gets you anywhere, it’s always beneficial to be trading cards you don’t want for different cards that you do want.

Torch hits for 3 damage, which is solid, but getting to replay it by readying it with a different card can put your enemy on the back foot pretty quickly. Likewise, you can go into a play pattern where you reuse Swelter to sweat all the enemy’s cards away over and over. Both strategies can lead to a win, and you’ll have to switch between them depending on the circumstances.

When you choose to burn a card to activate Boost, your enemy will probably want to Defend against your empowered abilities. But if you use it to Boost your Flint Gauntlets, they can’t even be safe behind a Defend! And if you notice your enemy trying to Defend out your boosted attacks, you can always use an extra exhausted card to bluff, and sneak in a safe Rest! —  Brian McKay
